What is self pollination?
self-pollination form of pollination can occur when flower has both stamen , carpel (pistil) in cultivar or species self fertile , stamens , sticky stigma of carpel contact each other in order accomplish pollination. term inaccurately used in many cases outside pollinator required; such plants merely self-fertile, or self pollenizing.
few plants self-pollinate. mechanism seen in legumes such peanuts. in legume, soybeans, flowers open , remain receptive insect cross pollination during day. if not accomplished, flowers self-pollinate closing. other plants can self-pollinate many kinds of orchids, peas, sunflowers, tridax, etc. of self-pollinating plants have small, relatively inconspicuous flowers shed pollen directly onto stigma, before bud opens. self-pollinated plants expend less energy in production of pollinator attractants , can grow in areas kinds of insects or other animals might visit them absent or scarce—as in arctic or @ high elevations.
self-pollination limits variety of progeny , may depress plant vigor. however, self-pollination can advantageous, allowing plants spread beyond range of suitable pollinators or produce offspring in areas pollinator populations have been reduced or naturally variable.
pollination can accomplished cross-pollination. cross-pollination transfer of pollen, either wind or insect, anther stigma between different flowers. :) :)
does self pollination include transfer of pollen grain anther of flower stigma of different flower of same plant? or case of cross pollination? confused!
