College student commuting at night - taking a cab?

i'm first-year college student got first job. live in san francisco , of course, have commute. though it's part-time job, there instances have work late (12:30 - 1:00 am). primary (well, only) source of transportation bus, ten block walk job, anywhere 10-30 minute wait, five-block walk home in relatively dark neighborhood.

i'm nervous , concerned safety; however, parents have offered pay me take cab nights working late. still, upon calculating, average around $250 month... worth it?

should stick bus, carry pepper spray, , hope best? or suck up, continue rely on parents, , take cab?
