CPU overheating after new heatsink?

bought new heatsink morning , had troubles getting work afternoon trying install it. installing decided i'd have wait till next day , put old heat sink in place, it's starting overheat, reaching temperatures 70-80 degrees celsius. before hand cpu run drastically cooler.
while re installing did have reapply thermal paste, barely had left put on extremely thin layer used credit card spread around. because applied little? or messed when trying deal heatsink.
