What do you do if your instrument isn't in the marching band?

check out thread marching oboe on oboeboard. can't imagine having marched oboe. instrument quite finicky itself---much smaller tone holes , more expensive repair of other woodwinds. , reed. can imagine standing @ attention 20 minutes , having play on dry reed? or standing @ parade rest , having dork cut between , next person, snapping unprotected reed? thought of trying keep reed stable while doing 6-to-5 or high step marching quite scary. 1 bump of bell knee you're playing. . .ugh, don't want think it.

have seen bassoon on marching field @ university; however, treated solo instrument remember. again, same scary scenarios marching oboe. second source thread marching bassoon. third thread has section on "marching bassoonists". ;-)

have few options can see:
convince band director let play oboe/bassoon in marching band. you'll have figure out convince him, such 1) signing waver won't come after him or school repairs and/or medical bills , 2) recommending part play, since marching band songs don't have oboe/bassoon parts. then, has last word. have accept final decision. if going pursue path, make sure prepared satisfy every argument has against marching oboe/bassoon , have parents involved in process (i assuming, of course, you're talking high school).

switch instrument marching season. had played flute, easy switch. other oboes played either clarinet or saxophone. bassoonist played in percussion section on sideline drum major senior year.

don't play in band @ school. there other venues play, if good. may have honors bands , orchestras in area. (i joined multiple groups play multiple instruments outside of school.) local community bands , orchestras may accept high school performer if group needs cover part , can prove quality player. churches have orchestras may take in high schooler (i did on flute , oboe). may play once month or every week. form own small group such woodwind quintet (or 2 play both instruments). lose possible referrals band director not student, such when local community theater asks performers, may not on list. don't know if there way convince band director , counselor allow join band half way through year (during concert season) , receive half credit.

regardless of end doing, make sure continue take private lessons on both instruments. best wishes decide how proceed.
