in betting line other
day
man behind me asked,
“are henry
chinaski?”

“uh huh,” answered.

“i books,” went
on.

“thanks,” answered.

“who in
race?” asked.

“uh uh,” answered.

“i 4 horse,”
told me.

made bet , went
seat….

next race standing in
line , here same man
standing behind me
again.

“i think race favors
closers,” said of
neck. “the track looks
heavy.”

“listen,” said, not looking
around, “it’s kiss of death
talk horses @
track…”

“what kind of rule that?”
asked. “god doesn’t make
rules…”

turned around , looked @ him:
“maybe not,
do.”

after next race
got in line, glanced behind
me:

lost reader.

lose 2 or 3 each
week.
