have play. on board tournaments in give uscf rating.

fide top notch rating recognized international rating. fide rated tournaments can competitive. though tournaments use uscf rating, can still establish fide rating @ tournaments. usually, big tournaments such nationals fide rated.

if don't want play in otb tournaments, still want genreal idea of rating might be.....
online chess servers such icc or chesscube have rating systems rather accurate in comparison fide or uscf ratings.
