Why are tsunamis in japan so bad?

since asking geography assignment, should learn technical terms.

area in japan worst hit tsunami in march 2011 sanriku coast. geographical feature of sanriku called ria. it's coastal inlet formed submergence of (unglaciated) river valley. whole of 2 prefectures worst hit tsunami, miyagi , iwate, ria.

should know valley funnels out mountain. if partially submerge ocean, inlet that's long , increasingly narrower go inside.

tsunami gush of water. if push same amount of water narrower channel, water level rises dramatically. that's how end high tsunamis on ria coast.

there major active faults off coast of sanriku, , earthquakes , tsunamis time. tsunamis 50cm in height. still drown in tsunami ankle high, want stay clear of tsunami, of these low enough stopped wharfs.

since east , south coasts of japan directly exposed pacific ocean, earthquake off coast of chile can hit japan tsunami. ria geographic feature of sanriku coast, , not of japan that.

i doing geography homework , need know why tsunamis bad in japan?
