I want a tattoo of my family crest. But I have two last names that go back to both crest. Should I mix them?
i'm tempted tell 1 on chest , other on back, 8 inches high. if goof, quart of gasoline, wire brush , steel balls need them off. quart of jim beam pain.
but, being @ top of list has responsibilities privileges. so, here's answer copy , paste 3 - 6 times week when people ask "family" coats of arms , crests.
crests top part of coat of arms. see
http://college-of-arms.gov.uk/faq.htm
third question. people confuse 2 words way confuse "cement" , "concrete". cement powdery substance. when mixed sand, gravel , water , poured - mold - dries. resulting dried mixture concrete.
if english, family coat of arms carved above fireplace in dining hall of family's country estate. next time go there grouse season, go @ it, , take camera. if don't have one, don't have other; sorry. ancestors mine, mucking out pigs while aristocrats coats of arms rode on white horses. (until moved became usa. of ancestors saw aristocratic brits on white horses there, too, on sights of muskets, in 1776.)

show coat of arms, crest, (probably) once issued same surname yours, but:
coats of arms started knights tell each other apart when buttoned in suits of armor. given individuals, not families. if, instance, every knight named smith used same coat of arms, there small army riding around identical shields. confusing basketball game both sides wore blue , every player number 12.
legitimate children inherit father's coat of arms. eldest son gets dad had it. other sons have pay college of heralds alter it, or give up. see
http://www.college-of-arms.gov.uk/about/...
more. gets complicated women. see below opinions.
that's myth of "family" coat of arms comes from. doesn't half manor houses in english murder mysteries have "family" coat of arms carved above fireplace , crest above front doors. people sell t-shirts , coffee mugs, encourage gullible believe coats of arms surname. (the irish , scots have clans, have badges, different.)
below:
if surname smith , come shropshire, may find sir albert smith, sir bruce smith , sir charles smith, shropshire, had coats of arms. if research, may find descend sir charles, although not eldest son of eldest son ... , line didn't pay college of heralds alter original one. comes question - using coat of arms proper? opinions differ.
demanding "your" room in ancestral smith estate in shropshire, current owners - ridiculous , illegal.
wearing regimental tie if didn't serve in regiment. (land's end sells thousands americans. never buy one.)
wearing scotch plaid shirt when don't belong clan. (ll bean sells tens of thousands of those; have "lindsay", myself.)
harmless wearing detroit tigers baseball cap when didn't play team, or uc berkeley t-shirt when didn't attend university. (or ohio state one, long you're going wear university t-shirt, why not finest?) (i have uc berkeley t-shirt, graduated there.)
so, there's facts , opinions using "family" coat of arms. can make own mind, after research.
my last name isom-riley.
