How can I better detail hair while drawing?

i'm not best artist, hell can hardly draw. i'm curious. can't draw @ unless i'm looking @ whatever i'm sketching. mostly, draw anime or cartoonish people. how can detail characters hair? tips on shadowing/voluming?
