What's wrong with my mazda 626?

have 2000 mazda 626, has rough idle, no surging dipping, , has died few times it. after stop light hesitates , stumbles through intersection. after driving little harder, on freeway smell burnt rubber, , stumble worse , check engine light flash. there belt squeal once in while well. told has rebuilt tranny, , shift time time, 1st 2nd. it's going through quite lot of oil, thinking might because has high mileage? 140000 approx. left black stain on driveway looks squirted out of exhaust pipe.

have pretty thoroughly checked vacuum leaks, had new intake manifold gasket put in, multiple hoses replaced, new map sensor, cleaned maf sensor, last time checked codes pulled catalytic system not functioning @ optimum code. catalytic, or more minor. plan on taking in diagnostic when taxes come through, prefer fix can ourselves.
