Independent contractor but in cash?

i'm 19 , work princess company go parties , entertain children i've never inquired paying taxes because paid people throwing party in cash. boss says don't need worry 1099 because have not recieved checks more $600 them. before started asked 1 of other princesse if paid taxes , said paid them 1099 yet havent gotten it. mean i'm getting paid under table? or same babysitter or kid getting paid wash someone's car? illegal?
