What is a good bass guitar to start out with?

what's budget? can learn on $5000 fodera if want. if anything, more expensive instruments easier play cheap "starter" instruments. assuming funds limited...

cheapest basses can still real instruments rather toys sx basses www.rondomusic.com. available online, can't try before buying, rondo returns, , can serviceable basic instrument $100, $140 starter pack small practice amp , accessories. not agree starter pack ibanez or else; brand-name starter packs no better sx's , cost twice much. mind you, these $100 basses; quality control iffy, lemons, , use set of decent strings , setup before being play. i've owned 2 sxs and, new strings , setup, both instruments.

if can afford more, can buy bass in store, means trying them out first , getting 1 feel , sound of. after sx, next price point recommend vintage modified , classic vibe lines squier (cheaper squiers, again, no improvement on sxs), run around $300 new. decent basses, i've had vm squier jaguar , loved it.

beyond $300 price point, once around $500 there lots of choices - standard mexican fenders, schecters, yamaha (one of basses never rid of yamaha bb415), stuff that. @ point it's go store , see like.

don't forget amp! little bedroom practice amp 10 or 15 watts cost $60 or + shipping rondo (unless starter pack thing), $100 or in store. if you're going jam band (including drummer...) you'll want more 75-100 watts through @ least 12" speaker (probably cost $150-200), if you're going gig rock or blues band @ least 200 watts through 15" speaker or set of 4 10"s ($500 or more).
