What causes neutral wires to become hot if they are connected correctly inside the receptacle?

1: spring contact neutral/common may have lost tension. cause poor connection , profuce heat. change receptacle , make sure connections tight.

2: if theis split receptacle fed double pole circuit breaker or 2 single pole circuit breakers; double pole circuit breaker or 2 single pole breakers installed on same line. split receptacles fed 2 live lines live lines line 1 , line 2 off main panel. if case, neutral overloaded , can cause fire. have reputable certified electrician check , make sure circuit breakers installed
