How do I get a good ratio of Clean/Distorted sound?


so, i've been playing guitar little on 2 years, , i'm not amps or guitar pedals. i've had distortion pedal awhile now, can't seem switch clean distortion without distortion being ridiculously loud w/clean volume that's barely audible.
i'm using peavey vyper amp w/ ds-1 distortion pedal. i've been trying play "welcome home sanitarium" metallica, requires frequent use of both clean , heavy distortion, if have distortion up, clean volume incredibly weak. if have clean volume up, distortion loud hurts ears.
so, how can good, moderately loud distortion sound, audible clean sound?
