How would U.S. governments respond if a group of Americans formed a militia to protect themselves from tyranny?

hypothetical of course let me better illustrate i'm trying say.

if bunch of american citizens got privately, bought bunch of legal weapons (even sophisticated ones, unmanned aircraft , such) , started drilling regularly , told had assembled protect american people threat of oppressive tyrannical government. basically, it's 1776, without actual threat.

how u.s. or state governments respond? try suppress such assembly , try take whatever steps had @ disposal (legal loopholes, etc.) or allow long didn't make aggressive maneuvers?
