low yield nuclear power devices have been used many years, similar in principle idea. nuclear fuel concentrated in these devices nuclear fission intensified natural radiation , therefore half-life of fuel shorter in natural concentrations. higher concentration required practical energy out of it. link below.

nuclear waste tiny compared coal or oil , whats problem extracting heat nuclear decay ? e.fermi had told how fission !
