Native Japanese speakers: To whom would you say 'Aishiteru' instead of '(Dai)suki desu'?


know 愛してる means 'i love you', i've heard in japan there husbands , wives not each other, , people have never said in lives. why that? how come 大好きです (i you) more common? mean surely must love @ point in life, family! have love 'aishiteru'? whom to? hope question isn't personal.
