What is the function of RNA?

rna has lots of functions.

mrna - messenger rna - "copy" of dna base sequence of gene after processing (capping, addition of 3' tail , splicing). used transfer genetic information dna, storage molecule , quite inaccessible, ribosomes, perform translation synthesise polypeptides.

trna - transfer rna - "charged" amino acid , used recognize code in mrna , "translate" amino acid carrying. there specific trna molecules each amino acid.

rrna - ribosomal ribonucleic acid rna component of ribosome, protein manufacturing machinery of living cells. ribosomal rna provides mechanism decoding mrna intoamino acids , interacts trnas during translation providing peptidyl transferase activity. trnas bring necessary amino acids corresponding appropriate mrna codon.

snrna - small nuclear rna - regulates , provides catalytic machinery splicing or mrna.

grna - guide rna - directs editing of rna specific sites.

mirna - micro rna - inhibits translation base pairing complementary sequences of mrna.

signal recognition particle - rna/protein molecule binds "signal sequence" on polypeptides sent endoplasmic reticulum, causing translation pause until polypeptide has been fed translocon entry er. :) :)
