dc-8 gear (nose , main gear) extended gravity -
no hydraulics required - becomes "down , locked" gravity -
required unlock "gear uplatch" - cable -

tells how stupid captain united 173 in portland -
"not sure" gear down (faulty light indication) -
gear down , locked -
besides on dc-8 there "gear down indicator" on wing -

wanted burn fuel out of tanks "just in case" -
sure enough, ran out of fuel , crashed -
